Indian Railways Seat & Refund Guide

A quick reference to berth patterns, coach builds, and IRCTC refund rules for Indian Railways passengers.

01 · Seat map

How Indian Railways Berth & Seat Numbering Works

Indian Railways seat numbers follow the bay, not the full coach. In Sleeper (SL) and AC 3-Tier (3A), berths repeat in groups of eight. Each bay runs: 1 and 4 Lower, 2 and 5 Middle, 3 and 6 Upper, 7 Side Lower, 8 Side Upper. The next bay continues 9–16, then 17–24, and so on to the end of the coach. Divide any seat number by eight and look at the remainder to get the berth type. Seat 33 leaves a remainder of 1, so it is a Lower berth in the fifth bay. Seat 66 leaves 2, so it is a Middle berth. This is why 5, 13, 21 and 29 are all Middle berths.

AC 3-Tier Economy (3E) needs care. Standard LHB 3E coaches have 83 berths. Some older or converted rakes add a Side Middle berth, so the final bays do not always mirror 3A. Check the coach type before relying on the eight-berth rule. AC 2-Tier (2A) uses six-berth bays: four main berths (two Lower, two Upper) plus Side Lower and Side Upper.

Chair cars are different. CC and Vande Bharat CC use 3x2 rows, and numbering runs across each row. Window seats are 1 and 5; 2 and 4 are middle or aisle positions; 3 is the aisle seat on the three-seat side.

02 · Coach build

LHB vs ICF Coach Layouts & Why Seat Numbers Shift

LHB coaches are the modern red coaches; ICF coaches are the older blue design. The difference changes capacity and where the final seats sit. LHB Sleeper carries 80 berths, ICF Sleeper 72. LHB 3A carries 72, ICF 3A 64. LHB 2A carries 52, ICF 2A 46. LHB Chair Car carries 78, ICF Chair Car 73.

Capacity is not the only difference. LHB coaches place the vestibule doors and bio-toilets at both ends, and the last bay sits directly beside them. In a 72-berth LHB 3A coach, seats 65–72 are the rear bay. That means foot traffic from passengers moving between coaches, door noise at stations, and the toilet on the same end. The same pattern appears in LHB Sleeper, where 73–80 are the last bay. In ICF rakes the last bay is lower — 57–64 in 3A and 65–72 in Sleeper — but it still shares the door end.

Pick a middle bay when you want quiet. Numbers in the 20s, 30s and 40s in 3A usually sit away from both doors. Avoid the first and last bay if you are sensitive to noise, light from the doorway, or toilet queues. A Lower berth in a middle bay is the most predictable overnight choice.

03 · Refund rules

IRCTC Ticket Cancellation & Refund Calculation Rules Explained

IRCTC refunds depend on how long before scheduled departure you cancel. For a confirmed ticket more than 48 hours before departure, the charge is flat clerkage per passenger: Rs.240 for 1A and EC, Rs.200 for 2A and FC, Rs.180 for 3A, 3E and CC, Rs.120 for SL, and Rs.60 for 2S. GST at 5% applies to cancellation charges on all AC classes, so the final deduction is slightly higher than the base figure.

Between 48 and 12 hours before departure, the deduction is 25% of the fare or the flat clerkage amount, whichever is higher. Between 12 and 4 hours, it is 50% of the fare or the same flat minimum, whichever is higher.

Less than four hours before departure, or after the chart is prepared, a confirmed ticket gets no refund. The same zero-refund rule applies to a confirmed ticket cancelled after the train has left its originating station.

Use the calculator on this page with your actual fare and class. The table amounts are the statutory base; the final figure also depends on the ticket's fare, the class, and whether GST applies.

04 · Exceptions

RAC, Waitlist (WL) & Tatkal Refund Exceptions

RAC and waitlisted tickets stay refundable until 30 minutes before scheduled departure. The deduction is Rs.60 per passenger as clerkage, with 5% GST added for AC classes. After the 30-minute cut-off there is no refund. For a waitlisted e-ticket that does not clear, the ticket is auto-cancelled after chart preparation and the amount is credited back to the original payment method. You do not need to file a separate cancellation request for that auto-cancelled e-ticket.

Tatkal is stricter. A confirmed Tatkal ticket (TQ or PT) has zero refund on cancellation. The only exceptions are when the train is delayed by more than three hours at the boarding station or when the train is cancelled by the railway. Waitlisted or RAC Tatkal tickets follow the normal RAC/WL rule: cancel up to 30 minutes before departure and lose Rs.60 per passenger plus GST where applicable.

Keep the PNR and the original payment method handy. Refunds go back to the same account or card used for booking, and the credit can take a few working days depending on the bank.

Frequently asked questions

The seat and refund questions Indian Railways passengers ask most, answered in plain language.

How do I find my seat position in an Indian Railways coach?

Enter your coach class and seat number in the Coach & Seat Finder. RailSeatmap maps the berth or chair position, including lower, middle or upper berth, side berth, window side, and whether the seat is near the door or in the middle of the coach. Seat numbers repeat in every coach, so confirm the coach letter on your ticket.

What is the difference between LHB and ICF coach layouts?

LHB coaches are the modern red coaches, while ICF coaches are the older blue coaches. Capacities and bay layouts differ: for example, an LHB Sleeper coach has 80 berths versus 72 in ICF. Use the coach build toggle in the seat map to match the coach on your ticket.

How much refund does IRCTC give on a confirmed ticket?

For a confirmed ticket, cancellation more than 48 hours before departure attracts flat clerkage. Between 48 and 12 hours the deduction is 25% of the fare or clerkage, whichever is higher; between 12 and 4 hours it is 50%. Less than 4 hours before departure, or after chart preparation, there is no refund. AC classes also attract 5% GST on the cancellation charge.

Can I get a refund on a confirmed Tatkal ticket?

No. Confirmed Tatkal tickets are non-refundable. Waitlisted or RAC Tatkal tickets can be cancelled up to 30 minutes before departure with clerkage deducted (₹60 per passenger, ₹63 for AC classes including GST). After that window, no refund is payable.

What is the refund rule for waitlisted and RAC tickets?

RAC and waitlisted tickets remain refundable until 30 minutes before scheduled departure, with ₹60 clerkage per passenger. For AC classes, 5% GST is added on the clerkage, making it ₹63 per passenger. Cancellations after the 30-minute cut-off get no refund.

Is RailSeatmap affiliated with IRCTC or Indian Railways?

No. RailSeatmap is an independent passenger utility tool and is not affiliated with IRCTC or Indian Railways. Seat maps are indicative and refund amounts are estimates. Always verify the current rules on the official IRCTC website before cancelling a ticket.
